Activity:

Experience First

In this activity, students will be shooting basketballs and throwing footballs at the gym and/or football field. You will want to coordinate with the PE teacher at your school to make sure you have access to basketballs, footballs, measuring tapes, basketball hoops, and a very large space for throwing footballs.

You will need to create two teams (Team A and Team B). We suggest using a random number generator in front of the students to create the teams. If you have another teacher in your building that also teaches Intro Stats, this activity could be modified so each teacher has their own team (yes of course we do Wilcox vs. Gallas).

Each student needs to perform 3 tasks and record their result for each:

1. Shoot 5 free throws. Record the number of makes.

2. Throw a football as far as possible (with their strong arm). Record distance.

3. Throw a football as far as possible (with their weak arm). Record the difference in distance (strong arm - weak arm).

Once the data are collected in the gym or football field, students will record their results on the board back in the classroom.

Tomorrow we will use confidence intervals and significance tests (4-step) to analyze the data.
